July 2009
My first artist of the month is Sam Meyers. I first met Sam at Schooners, a blues club in Lakewood, East Dallas. I walked in late one night and caught the end of a set where Sam had been on stage singing and blowing the harp. He had gone up to the bar and I walked up to him and said "Man you were great You should cut an album sometime. He said " You dumb [bleep], I already have ten W.C. Handy Awards, get the [bleep] out of my face". We later became good friends and he and his best freind Joe Jonas would often come into Daddy Jack's for a dinner. I was able to get Sam into the studio to cut fourteen songs through the years down at Butch Bonners studio in south Dallas. I call the band the Daddy Jack's Allstars, Butch on Guitar, Lucky Peterson on Keyboards, Brent Nance on Drums, and Big Will on Bass. All these songs were recorded with one or two takes. Sam would count it down and magic would happen. I wanted to record a song Sam wrote in the 50's when he was playing with Elmore James called "Sleeping in the Ground". Sam got ill real fast and passed away before we could record it but a short time ago I got his best frend Joe into the studio to record it as a tribute to Sam.
R.I.P.
Sam, you are greatly missed but thank you for all the great music and memories that you left behind,
Jack
